I stumbled upon a fantastic traveling installation this weekend. Camper Obscura is a project that aims to engage many people from local and wider communities in and around Devonport, in order to explore their relationship to their surroundings through the use of Photography.

As the name might suggest Camper Obscura is in fact a giant Camera Obscura on wheels. The blue ‘periscope’ on the top is in fact a lens and mirror set up which projects light into a blacked out rear cabin. Viewers are then encouraged to hold up a large white viewing board where the image comes to life in front of them. What you immediately experience is the detached view of a scene that you would usually only get from a still photograph.

It’s really quite captivating. Even when viewing the mundane surroundings of Spitalfields market, the details of the scene suddenly become of interest where they would usually be overlooked if walking by on the street. You feel completely removed from the scene even though you are sitting right in the middle of it.

The project – commissioned by Devonport Regeneration Community Partnership – was initially intended to be used in the Devonport area, but now travels around the country. Unfortunately my camera couldn’t pick up the projection as the light levels are so low in the back of the van, if you want to see it you will have to see it for real.

It wouldn’t be a proper event without any posters, and for that we took inspiration from the barbecue itself. A special thanks to Jess, Basille, Dom and photographer John, for helping to ‘cook up’ a real treat. All items featured in the posters were burnt for real, on a barbecue. If there is one thing that I have learnt – apart from the fact that burning things is super dangerous – iMac’s take a really, really long time to burn. Keyboards and mice on the other hand are super quick!

Selfridges is stampeded by bright yellow sheep

We were amused to read, in the Evening Standard the other day, that Selfridges has recently come under attack from a flock of bright yellow sheep.

As part of a campaign to celebrate British Wool Week, the landmark store was over-run by the woolly masses in a PR stunt that was undoubtedly eye-catching – if not a tad familiar…Despite being impressed with the campaign idea, and being fans of British Wool, it did seem to bear a striking resemblance to a campaign that we ran for Saks Fifth Avenue back in 2005 as part of their cashmere promotion, where we unleashed Cashmere goats on the store.

If there’s one thing we’ll miss about Morton Street it’s the view – so I’ve attached some ‘greatest hits’ from one of the most distracting views around.

As you may have seen from a blog post on here last week, we entered a competition run by Metro newspaper and D&AD to design a cover wrap for the Metro newspaper. The winner was announced last Wednesday evening at a lovely event hosted by Metro and D&AD. We were absolutely delighted when our ‘Flowers’ idea chosen as the overall winner and couldn’t wait to see it come out in print.

Well, today’s the day. We have spent all Bank Holiday weekend getting more excited about coming back in to work today than the plentiful bounty of chocolate at our fingertips over Easter. Personally, this morning I ended up in work an hour and a half early as I couldn’t wait to get down to the tube station to pick up my copy of the Metro and see how people were responding to the cover. (yes, I really AM that sad…and I’m proud!)

We’ve all been Tweeting all weekend also to encourage our followers to send us photos from today of their #metrowrap, and the photos/comments have been coming in thick and fast all morning. Our friend Christine Donnier-Valentin has her latest project ‘sofa’ featured on Eye Magazine’s blog.

“The sofa is an object of comfort in a home, filled with memories of conversations, laughter, tears, play, books, food. And then it is discarded, taken outside and left next to the bins,” says Christine.

I’m hoping her next set will be abandoned mattresses…
